Job Description

Salary Range: $90,000-$110,000
Location: Portland, OR
Employment Type: Full-Time
Industry: Manufacturing / Consumer Packaged Goods

Role Overview

Our client is a growing food and ingredient manufacturer entering a critical phase of operational maturity. With refreshed leadership and a clear business direction, they are investing in a Controller who can bring discipline, visibility, and consistency across finance and people operations.

This role is ideal for a hands-on finance leader who enjoys being close to the business-owning core accounting functions while also stewarding payroll, benefits, and HR infrastructure. Success in this position requires comfort operating in evolving environments and an interest in shaping how systems, processes, and teams work together.

Key Responsibilities

Accounting & Financial Operations

  • Maintain the general ledger and oversee an accurate, timely close process
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting
  • Develop cash flow projections and financial models to support near- and long-term decisions
  • Collaborate with leadership on budgeting, unit economics, and margin analysis
  • Enhance internal financial controls in a practical, scalable way
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external accounting and tax partners
  • Support operational metrics and leadership reporting cadence

People Operations & Compliance

  • Administer payroll, benefits, and employee-related compliance
  • Maintain employee records and manage onboarding and separations
  • Support the evolution of compensation structures, role clarity, and performance processes
  • Act as a reliable, objective point of contact for HR matters
  • Ensure compliance with employment regulations while fostering consistency and fairness

Ideal Background

This role is a strong fit for someone who:

  • Enjoys creating structure in environments that are still taking shape
  • Balances financial rigor with practicality
  • Moves comfortably between analytical work and people-focused problem solving
  • Communicates clearly and directly
  • Takes ownership and follows through

This is not a role for someone seeking a narrowly defined accounting function, extensive delegation, or highly established infrastructure.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance leadership roles
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and operational finance
  • Experience with payroll processing, benefits administration, and HR compliance
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Comfort working in QuickBooks-based systems
  • Ability to work on-site or hybrid in the Portland, OR area

Preferred

  • Background in manufacturing, CPG, or inventory-driven businesses
  • Exposure to inventory or ERP systems (e.g., Fishbowl or similar)
  • CPA or HR-related credentials (helpful, not required)

Why Consider This Role

  • High visibility and direct partnership with senior leadership
  • Meaningful influence on financial health, internal systems, and team experience
  • Opportunity to help scale a business with a clear mission and strong potential
  • Fast-moving environment with real responsibility and trust
  • Long-term growth potential for someone ready to take ownership
